I first visited Marrakesh on my honeymoon in 1986. In 2011, I revisited this wonderful town to find it very changed, modernized and not quite as authentic to the Marrakesh of Crosby Stills and Nash.
The roads in the souks used to be dirt and mostly open to the skies. Every stall was practically filled with Artisans, working away and selling the goods from the same small closet sized spaces. Today, Marrakesh has turned into much more of a commercial enterprise with stores everywhere and tradesmen ready to haggle with you on the price of goods at every opportunity. The few artisans remaining have been pushed to the outskirts of the Souk.
One of the few places to see one of the traditional arts in action is inside Souk El Sebbaghine, Marrakesh’s “Souk des teinturiers” or the Dyers Souk. It is located beside the Mouassine Fountain and can be reached through the portal beside the fountain.
Wool for weaving and carpets are dyed and spun here, as is the cotton for the authentic blue Touareg nomad head scarves.
You can visit the ancient dyeing vats for a small fee and see the wool being dyed by the local men. In the courtyard, brightly colored wool hangs to dry from bamboo rods overhead such as shown in my 2 photographs, one of red wool (A030) and the other of blue A027).
Dyers today still use centuries old techniques of using organic pigments from natural plants such as saffron for yellow and minerals for blue colors such as indigo. They dye wool, cotton and cactus silk. The dyeing process is still very manual and organic which is the best way to treat textiles.
This place is the only place in the market where you are guaranteed to get authentic scarves and not some cheap imitation. There are no pressures for you to buy anything and prices reflect the quality of the goods. There is not much haggling to be done here.
These landscape format images can only be printed in our smallest size of 16”x20” (because of the resolution of the older digital negative). These art prints work wonderfully as a pair and as part of a gallery wall. If you are looking for a vibrant art print or two to liven up your space, these photographs are a great choice.
