The Old Royal Naval College is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with over 500 years of history

The site of the Old Royal Naval College was once Greenwich Palace (1498–1694). It was the birthplace of the Tudor monarch King Henry VIII and his daughters Queen Mary I and Queen Elizabeth I.

In 1694, King William III granted the Palace site by Royal Warrant as the location for a charitable institution for naval veterans, in accordance with the wishes of his late wife, Queen Mary II. Esteemed architect Sir Christopher Wren was commissioned to build the “Royal Hospital for Seamen”.

The Royal Naval College provided state-of-the-art training for around 27,000 officers to be from Britain and beyond as the Navy made the transition from sail to steam power.

In 1983 the Government decided to consolidate the training of its armed forces and the Navy vacated the premises in 1997. The Greenwich Foundation, an independent charity, was established to conserve the site for present and future generations. Its mission is to “create enjoyment, learning and unique cultural experiences for everyone” and in 1998, it opens its doors for all to visit,

The Painted Hall, a Baroque masterpiece shown here, is known as Britain’s Sistine Chapel. The Hall boasts one of the most spectacular Baroque interiors in Europe. The incredible ceiling and wall decorations were conceived and executed by British artist Sir James Thornhill. The painting scheme took over 19 years to complete from start to finish.

This work earned him a knighthood and a payment of £6,685.

Trompe l’oeil (‘trick the eye’) and chiaroscuro (contrast of light and dark) are used extensively throughout, from the face of pilasters to the wall panels and faux friezes to enliven his paintings. His extensive use of illusionistic architecture and perspective was inspired by Italian baroque painting.

The Painted Hall was originally intended as a grand dining room for the naval pensioners but it soon became a ceremonial space open to paying visitors and reserved for special functions.

Many state dinners have been held there and it is featured in many movies (4 weddings and a funeral, the Madness of King George).

Seen here is the wonderful reflection of the space on the face of a dark highly polished table strategically placed in the center of the outer hall which gives the illusion of making the space seem even larger and more majestic. This portrait format art print is suitable for printing at large scales on any of our printing mediums.  It would make a great wall decor piece for residential, corporate and commercial spaces and is a wonderful gift for lovers of English Baroque Architecture, Architectural Historians, Wren Architectural lovers and Anglophiles.

Clear sizing for your wall art

Different images look best in different sizes and proportions. I don't lure you in with deceptive prices on ridiculously small prints. Instead, I select the best sizes and mediums for each piece of wall art. Because some of my images were taken during the earlier days of digital photography, I cannot enlarge them beyond certain sizes without losing quality.

Transparent pricing

No hidden fees. Everything, including 2-day shipping, is reflected in the price, so you'll know exactly how much you'll pay. However, state and local taxes have to be added separately and vary based on your location. They will be automatically calculated at checkout.

Quality printing

I work with one of the finest print houses in the US to print, assemble and ship all of your orders

Frame add-ons

Should you decide to use a framed option, I have pre-selected a few of our favorite box frames for you to choose from. Looking for something different?

Stunning mediums, handpicked
for each print

Different images require different mediums to reflect the photographers’ artistic vision and to preserve artistic integrity. A black and white architectural print aimed to create an industrial feel will require a different medium from a brilliant nature photo. I recommend the best mediums for each fine art photo shown on this website so you can order confidently, knowing that the piece of artwork you receive will reflect the style you are hoping to create.
