Sir John Soane was the son of a bricklayer. His father’s association with architects and people in the field and his raw artistic talent won him a position to train as an architect. While in school, Soane received the prestigious Royal Academy Gold medal which came with a stipend. This allowed him to travel throughout Europe to visit Greek and Roman ruins. His travels inspired a lifelong interest in Classical Architecture.

His most famous architectural commission was his design for the Bank of England as well as his home/museum. The 3 buildings he purchased for his home with the help of his wife’s money are located at Lincoln Fields Inn, just around the corner from London’s Soho Theater District.

His office was located there and he filled his home with an ever expanding collection of classical paintings, sculptures, fragments of classical stone carvings, antiquities as well as architectural models. He had collected thousands of important items.

He arranged that at the time of his death, his home would be preserved in perpetuity – and to keep it open and free for inspiration and education. Upon his death in January 1837, the Board of Trustees took on the responsibility of upholding Soane’s wishes – as they continue to do so to this day.

Today, there is an admission charge and they conduct a variety of tours. I took the highlights tour, allowing you to get into spaces not open to the public otherwise. There is a spectacular picture room containing masterpieces by Canaletto (view of Venice, View of St Marco and View of the Rialto Bridge), drawings by Piranesi and paintings by Turner and Hogarth. The paintings and drawings are hanging from movable planes that open like shutters to display more layers of artworks. In a 12x13 foot room, he was able to display over 118 works of art!

I first visited this museum in 1984, shortly after graduating from Architecture School. Post Covid, the access to many of the rooms have been restricted to most except a few people on their tours which were well worthwhile taking. There has been an ongoing continuing restoration effort, opening up some of the private living quarters and I now learn that access to his studio space is open for tours for the first time in its 200-year history.

While I have some really nice shots of the interior of the museum, I opted to include images of architectural and ornamentation details and offer them as black and white prints. While these art prints can be made in larger sizes, we are offering them in the sizes that make the most sense- The two John Soane black and white photography prints are in portrait format and we offer them in sizes up to 30”x40”. They are sold individually.

Clear sizing for your wall art

Different images look best in different sizes and proportions. I don't lure you in with deceptive prices on ridiculously small prints. Instead, I select the best sizes and mediums for each piece of wall art. Because some of my images were taken during the earlier days of digital photography, I cannot enlarge them beyond certain sizes without losing quality.

Transparent pricing

No hidden fees. Everything, including 2-day shipping, is reflected in the price, so you'll know exactly how much you'll pay. However, state and local taxes have to be added separately and vary based on your location. They will be automatically calculated at checkout.

Quality printing

I work with one of the finest print houses in the US to print, assemble and ship all of your orders

Frame add-ons

Should you decide to use a framed option, I have pre-selected a few of our favorite box frames for you to choose from. Looking for something different?

Stunning mediums, handpicked
for each print

Different images require different mediums to reflect the photographers’ artistic vision and to preserve artistic integrity. A black and white architectural print aimed to create an industrial feel will require a different medium from a brilliant nature photo. I recommend the best mediums for each fine art photo shown on this website so you can order confidently, knowing that the piece of artwork you receive will reflect the style you are hoping to create.
