Falling Water is one of the most well recognized architect homes of the 20th century, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright for the Kaufmann Family, owners of the largest department store in Pittsburgh.
The home is located in Mill Run in the Laurel Highlands of southwestern PA. It is one of Frank Lloyd Wright's most famous projects, which exemplifies his philosophy of organic architecture, where art and nature come together.
It is situated along a stream at the edge of a small waterfall, with water running at its base. There is a staircase from the living room which gives the residents the ability to go down to the water's edge.
In 1963, Edgar Kaufmann Jr donated Falling water and its surrounding 469 acres to the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy.
As a student in Architecture, I studied Falling Water and its relationship to the land and water. It was not until the summer of 2021 that I was able to visit the site and experience the harmony myself. I was surprised by the curved exterior staircase with large slabs of reinforced concrete hanging above to provide shade. It helps tie various sections of the home together.
This view of Falling Water is the classic view taken from the lookout point below one of the footpaths. It was taken with my iPhone (yes I forgot to charge my Nikon battery!!!) and I will be back to visit again with my proper equipment soon.

- Never use an ammonia-based glass cleaner such as Windex. The ammonia will cloud the acrylic.
