The Old Royal Naval College is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with over 500 years of history
The site of the Old Royal Naval College was once Greenwich Palace (1498–1694). It was the birthplace of the Tudor monarch King Henry VIII and his daughters Queen Mary I and Queen Elizabeth I.
In 1694, King William III granted the Palace site by Royal Warrant as the location for a charitable institution for naval veterans, in accordance with the wishes of his late wife, Queen Mary II. Esteemed architect Sir Christopher Wren was commissioned to build the “Royal Hospital for Seamen”.
Wren designed the four buildings with their two domes in the “English Baroque” style. The entire complex was completed after Wren’s death by a number of other architects. For the design, Wren decided to create a pair of large blocks with domed towers: the King William Block and the Queen Mary Block. These are set back from the riverside, and linked by colonnades. He designed a second set of blocks closer to the river.
The domes are similar to the dome of St Paul's Cathedral, but smaller. St Paul’s Cathedral was probably Wren’s most famous architectural work. Each tower seen here has a clock face, but one of the clock faces does not mark the hours, but the points of the compass with a marking arrow tied to a weather vane on the roof. That way, ships navigating the Thames could see at a which direction the wind was blowing.
The Old Royal Naval College is an easy ride via Uber waterway. We picked up the boat near Westminster Abbey and it takes approximately ½ hour for the sailing.
