This wonderful abstract shot depicts the spines (steel ribs) at the Oculus, the NYC downtown transit center designed by Santiago Calatrava. The scale and design are a perfect representation of New York resilience after 9/11.
The structure’s white metal-clad steel ribs reach up and out in a monumental move symbolic of a hand releasing a dove. In my opinion as an architect, it is the most important architectural building constructed in New York City in the last 75 years.
This transportation hub is home to 12 subway lines, the World Trade Center path station and numerous retailers. the project has been heavily criticized for both for the lengthy delays and for being the most costly station anywhere in the world, costing the public $3.9 billion, $2 billion more than initially estimated.
This shot was taken on my iphone 11 and I have not been able to duplicate it to date on my Nikon.
The print produced from this image brings out beautiful grain in the shadow areas, reminiscent of images taken on the old Kodak Tri-X film.
This image was a finalist in a black and white photo competition by Kira Art Gallery in 2022, recognized for best "best Pattern" and is shortlisted in a black and White international competition in the "Architecture" Category, along with 3 other images of mine in the same category.
