This is a square format black and white photograph of one of the bay windows at the New York Yacht Club located in Manhattan on West 44rd Street. It is shot in color but I converted it to black and white as the gray limestone does nothing for a successful color photograph. It is also only offered in square format up to size 36”x36” as a paper art print or metal print.
It is a wonderful study in how form follows function successfully. The windows are adorned to look like the back of a Spanish Galleon. At night, the windows really come alive when the light from the interior sparkles through to the street.
Commodore Pierpont Morgan donated 3 lots on west 44th street to build a new clubhouse. It was commissioned to architects Whitney Warren and Charles Whitmore who designed it in the Classical Beaux Arts style and the clubhouse was finally opened in 1906. It houses a wonderful model room with a majestic fireplace and a private library. It is a private club for sailing aficionados and membership is by invitation only.
I have been invited as a guest for dinner to this Club and it is one of those very exclusive and special places in NYC.
This photography print would look great in a study or den and would make a wonderful gift for boat, sailing and New York City lovers and admirers of Beaux Arts architecture.
