The Adirondack State Park was created in 1892 in eastern upstate New York, It was one of the first Forever Wild Forest Preserves in the nation and is a National Historic Landmark.
The park covers an area of over 6 million acres and is the largest publicly protected area in the contiguous United States- It is bigger than Yosemite, Yellowstone, Grand Canyon, Glacier, and the Great Smokies National Parks combined.
The state of New York owns approximately 2.6 million acres, while the remaining 3.4 million acres are devoted to forestry, agriculture and open space recreation. A large portion of the Adirondack Park is made up of Forest Preserve. The Adirondack Park is not a National Park - there's no fee to enter and the park doesn't close at night, nor is it a state park, a common misconception. It's also the largest National Historic Landmark in the United States, covering an area larger than Yellowstone, Yosemite, Grand Canyon, Glacier, and the Great Smokies National Parks combined. The Catskills and Adirondack are only 2 areas designated as forever wild in NY State
The river shown here is the Ausable. It drains a watershed of around 516 square miles, starting in the High Peaks area around Mt. Marcy (NY State’s highest peak which I climbed in my late teens) and ending in Lake George. At high water levels, the upper end of the Ausable provides demanding whitewater paddling opportunities. My most memorable whitewater rafting trip was a long weekend on the Ausable in 1980. A College friend had borrowed boy scout rafts and we navigated through the deep gorges and slept on the banks of the river. The water was still freezing in May with snow melt-off. At one point, our raft got stuck on a boulder similar to one portrayed here and we had to exit to help get the raft loose. We were all very strong swimmers but it was terrifying nevertheless, even in life vests and with helmets on our heads.
When I view this beautiful image, I often think of my earlier times on the river’s water. The orange glow of maples along the banks of the river warms my heart, every time I look at this photograph.
