This trio of pastel colored conch shacks were shot in the late afternoon on a somewhat overcast day. I could not resist capturing the beautiful cotton candy like colors painted onto the board and batten exterior clapboard, making these simple structures stand out from the other buildings nearby. It is a lovely landscape format colorful photograph and the art print would look great as an addition to your beach home or summer lake house. It can be printed in sizes up to 30”x40”.
Conch architecture was developed by Bahamian immigrants called “Conchs” in the 19th century. Influenced by Gulf Coast building techniques, as well as New England architecture, Conch buildings spread throughout The Keys and Miami. In Old Town Key West there are over 3,000 wooden buildings built between 1886 and 1912. This conglomeration of conch structures is “the largest historical district on the US Department of the Interior’s National Register of Historic Places.”
Conch buildings have mortar made from sand, water, and lime. Stones were not to be found in the sandy keys and bricks were non-existent. The early Bahamian settlers looked to the abundant conch shells as a replacement for the source of mortar. Lime for the mortar was made by burning conch shells.
Homes in the Bahamas were commonly made of clapboard, which with the help of the Bahamian immigrants, translated over to Conch architecture. This type of building originally used South Florida pine clapboard initially, but high demand soon made it scarce. This was replaced with clapboard and structural elements of cedar, and cypress which became the new standard.
Sloped metal roofs replaced the shingled roofs as the hot sun was reflected off the metal, keeping the buildings cooler. These metal roofs also became the standard as a result of a series of devastating fires.
If you are looking for beach wall art or summer wall decor, this is a great art print.
