The Old Royal Naval College is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with over 500 years of history
The site of the Old Royal Naval College was once Greenwich Palace (1498–1694). It was the birthplace of the Tudor monarch King Henry VIII and his daughters Queen Mary I and Queen Elizabeth I.
In 1694, King William III granted the Palace site by Royal Warrant as the location for a charitable institution for naval veterans, in accordance with the wishes of his late wife, Queen Mary II. Esteemed architect Sir Christopher Wren was commissioned to build the “Royal Hospital for Seamen”.
Wren designed the four buildings with their two domes in the “English Baroque” style. The entire complex was completed after Wren’s death by a number of other architects. For the design, Wren decided to create a pair of large blocks with domed towers: the King William Block and the Queen Mary Block. These are set back from the riverside, and linked by colonnades. He designed a second set of blocks closer to the river.
Shown in this photograph is the Colonnade outside the Chapel in the King William Block. The King William building was built by Hawksmoor. At the time of its construction, a shortage of Portland Stone forced the use of magnesium limestone and Northamptonshire Clipsham. These materials soon decayed, and several failed attempts by the Royal Navy to repair the elevation by slurry-coating it with cement made matters worse. The facade suffered badly by “catching” traffic pollution and pollution caused by extensive use of coal until the 1960’s. The Queen Mary building was built slightly later by Thomas Ripley, and constructed more uniformly in Portland stone. It did not experience similar issues to the King William block. The Greenwich Foundation is now responsible for the upkeep of these buildings and has instituted ongoing maintenance to restore the stone.
The King William Colonnade portrayed here exhibits a very strong use of perspective, one of the main pillars of the English Baroque movement. Perspective defines real or implied movement, an attempt to represent infinity. This image would do well in a tight or feature space such as in a nook, over a fireplace or at the end of a hallway. The viewer is drawn into the photograph and the perspective gives the illusion that the space just goes on and on.
This black and White portrait format architectural photograph of King William’s Court Colonnade can be printed on paper and metal and works great in large sizes. This photography print is suitable for residential, commercial and corporate spaces. It would make a wonderful gift for lovers of English Baroque Architecture, Architectural Historians, Wren Architectural lovers and Anglophiles.
