In 1694, King William III granted the Palace site by Royal Warrant as the location for a charitable institution for naval veterans, in accordance with the wishes of his late wife, Queen Mary II. Esteemed architect Sir Christopher Wren was commissioned to build the Royal Hospital for Seamen.
The beautiful Chapel of St Peter & St Paul was part Sir Christopher Wren’s original design for the Royal Hospital for Seamen at Greenwich. After a large fire, the Chapel was rebuilt in 1779 by James Stuart. The very ornate ceiling is adorned with naval themes, and above the altar hangs an exceptional altarpiece painted by Benjamin West. The Chapel is now regarded as one of the finest neoclassical interiors in existence.
The Chapel ceiling is a very fine piece of craftsmanship and is almost certainly responsible for the superb acoustics of the space. It was designed by the master plasterer John Papworth in a neo-classical design of squares and octagons. The intricate central ornaments were carved, rather than cast in molds. It is plastered in light blue and cream following a Wedgewood-inspired color scheme.
