The Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta is the largest balloon Fest in the world and takes place every October for 9 days in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The Festival in 2022 marked the 50th anniversary of the Fiesta.It is a wonderful sight to see over 500 balloons being released into the air simultaneously. It should be on everyone’s bucket list
The balloon Fiesta takes place on the grounds of the Balloon Fiesta Park which is north off the City right off I-25 which is the main highway leading to Santa Fe. The park is located in an urban field surrounded by buildings, highways, industry and power lines. This is probably not what you imagined (I know the location was a little let down for me) but is convenient right off the highway.
The locals I met recommended I head out there at 4:30 am to see all the balloons being set up. It is also a great way to park near the entrance to the Park although there are regular shuttle buses to ferry off people who parked in spots further away. I arrived when it was still dark and it was fun to experience the glow of the balloons being filled with burning hot air gasses. At around 7 am (weather /wind dependent), the balloons are released simultaneously into the sky which is a fabulous sight to see.
I particularly enjoy the bright balloons and I photographed many but I have to admit my favorite is the Dark Side of the Moon balloon as it conjures up so many fond memories of my early days in Architecture School- See A013.
On most evenings, the balloons light up the sky again for the Twilight Twinkle Glow/ Night Magic Glow, a dazzling display of fireworks lighting up the nighttime sky. There are a large number of food and merchandise vendors and it is a great place to experience your first breakfast burrito or native fried bread.
