There has been a walkway crossing the river Thames at this point since 1845. A suspension footbridge was designed and constructed at this location by Isambard Kingdom Brunel.
These footbridges connected the Southbank, now the Queen’s Walk, with the 180 year old Hungerford Market on the Northbank of the Thames. The market is no longer in existence as it closed in 1860 to make way for Charing Cross Railway Station.
A pair of new footbridges, running along either side of the rail line across the Thames were constructed and named in honor of the Silver Jubilee marking Queen Elizabeth II's accession to the throne. The construction provided many challenges such as unexploded World War II bombs (they still find them somewhat regularly while doing excavations around London , as well as having to avoid the London Underground’s Tube tunnels. These run just a few feet under the river bed. The railway also had specific requirements not to disrupt the busy commuter trains running in between the pair of pedestrian bridges.
Today, the foot bridges go from above the Embankment tube station to the South Bank near Royal Festival Hall. The west side offers views of Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament and the east side views of the City Of London including St Paul's Cathedral, and more modern buildings.
My daughter and I walked across the Golden Jubilee Bridges to get over to the London Eye and a disappointing Christmas outdoor market happening along the waterfront on the south side. While a nice panorama of Westminster Abbey and Big Ben (it was under scaffolding at the time) and the London eye with its pink evening glow was taken, as an architect I was more interested in the structural suspension of the bridges and their strong lines, as photographed here.
This photography print is a black and white portrait format, best printed on any of our paper and metal surfaces and can be reproduced at large sizes. Color was of no importance in taking this shot and so it was stripped out of the photo to reveal a much more interesting black and white series of dark lines against a clouded lighter sky with the far end of the perspective lines being anchored by a spattering of building silhouettes.
This architectural art print is suitable for residential, commercial and corporate spaces.
