Storm King In New Windsor, NY is a 500 acre outdoor museum and sculpture Park. Here very large works can be experienced “en plain air”. It is the largest display of outdoor sculptures in the US. While there are some large permanent pieces there, they do rotate the outdoor sculpture so that there is always something new to discover. The Center brings art, nature and people under open sky. The Art Center commissions site specific pieces, acquires and borrows others for display on the grounds.
It was founded in 1960 by Ralph E. Ogden as a museum for Hudson River School paintings but soon evolved into its current form. The rolling hills with grass and trees look natural but were carefully sculpted and molded to form the right setting for each piece. Pieces by many of the Masters of 20th century sculpture are permanently exhibited in the fields and among the trees, including pieces by Calder, David Smith, Henry Moore, Richard Serra, Isamu Noguchi and Louise Nevelson. More recent large-scale pieces by contemporary masters include sculptures by Roy Lichtenstein and Alexander Liberman.
One of the most well known contemporary female architects and sculptors, Maya Lin (winner of Washington DC’s Vietnam War Memorial while still Yale), was commissioned to rework the landscape (a former gravel pit) and created the Wavefield in 2009, which consists of seven long rows of undulating land forms, mimicking “to scale” undulating waves in the sea.
My personal favorite is a piece called “suspended” by Menashe Kadishman, composed of one very large weathered steel piece coming out of the ground at an angle and a smaller piece seeming to hang off one of its top edges in the air, with nothing supporting it other than its sharp contact with the edge of the larger piece. It seems to defy gravity. It is wonderful to walk around and under.
Storm King is located approximately 90 minutes from Manhattan and is a great way to spend a day in beautiful Ulster County nature.
